After storm damage in Missouri
Use a safety-first, evidence-preserving sequence
Follow emergency instructions first. Report the loss through the insurer’s official claim channel, document conditions when it is safe, take reasonable steps to protect property from further damage, retain receipts, and ask the insurer before permanent repairs. Policy duties and insurer instructions control.
What to do after the immediate danger passes
Follow safety instructions
Call 911 for emergencies. Avoid downed power lines, unstable structures, gas odors, standing water near electricity, and other hazards.
Find the correct claim route
Use the policy, insurer website, insurer app, or official claim number. Record the claim number and the name of each person contacted.
Document before cleanup
When safe, take broad and close photographs or video, make a written list, and keep damaged property unless the insurer or safety officials direct otherwise.
Prevent additional damage
Make reasonable temporary repairs, such as covering an opening, when safe. Keep receipts. Do not create new damage or put yourself at risk.
Wait on permanent work
Missouri DCI advises consumers not to make permanent repairs until the insurer has inspected the damage when practical.
Keep a claim file
Retain estimates, receipts, photographs, correspondence, temporary-living records, and notes of calls in a secure location.
Contractor and repair cautions
- Use contractors known to you or recommended by a trusted source.
- Be cautious with door-to-door pressure and promises about insurance payment.
- Do not let an unknown contractor inspect without supervision.
- Read contracts, assignments, and payment terms before signing.
- Avoid paying the full repair amount before agreed work is complete.
- Ask the insurer how estimates, supplements, and inspections should be handled.
